Considerations for Aged Care Needs Assessments with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Aged Care Needs Assessments are an important tool for older people to gain access to the supports they require, however many organisations and workers have found that these needs assessments are not working for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The 2017 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Group held a workshop in 2018 at the Australian Association of Gerontology’s (AAG) annual conference. In the past, workshops have identified that appropriate aged care assessment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a key issue, and needs to be addressed.

The Caring for Indigenous Australians, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, in Aged Care Program was developed for staff of Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs). It describes how to provide culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in RACFs. The program aims to assist staff so they can recognise how to respond to the cultural needs of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receiving care.
